Email Address.Every shaman needs a music maker. Sound and music are used to call in energy and spirit guides; transport one on journeys; support ceremony and ritual, and facilitate meditation. Drums frequently serve this purpose. If you have ever had the privilege of participating in or listening to the beating created from a drum circle, you know how powerful the hypnotic, trance-inducing rhythmic sound of the drum can be.
The hand-held hoop or frame drum is a favorite choice of shamans and healers. Our frame drums are crafted in the traditional Native American style— stretching animal skin across a natural maple wood hoop frame. Hold these drums by their back handle which is wrapped in recycled mink or leather. The type of animal skin used carries with it different characteristics and sounds.
In order of thin to thick, elk skin is typically thinner and lighter; cow is next, then buffalowith moose being thickest.Mass follow instagram free
The thicker the skin, and larger the drum, the deeper the sound. Animal skin drums need protection from changes in temperature and moisture. Yet, technology touches everything and these days that includes the humble drum. Remo Belli, founder of the Remo Companywas an American jazz drummer who developed and marketed the first successful synthetic drumheads. These drums have all the benefits of a natural drum, without the use of animal skin or direct impact on trees.
With heads made from synthetic material and shells made from recycled wood fiber, there is no worry from the effects of temperature and moisture.
They are durable, inexpensive, lightweight and weather resistant while attaining that drumbeat that you long for from a drum. We recognize that our customers have preferences when it comes to selecting a drum. While some would not consider using a product made from animals, others prefer to follow a more traditional natural path when selecting their instrument.
We hope our choices provide a balance for all. Others have plain skins and heads to embellish or not. And every drum comes with its own beater and is made in the USA. Follow Us. About Latest Posts. Drums should be cared for in a manner befitting their place in your life. It is a common practice to keep shamanic drums out of sight or wrapped in a cloth when not being used, as this will prevent careless handling of them or accidental disrespecting of the spirits of the drums by people unfamiliar with shamanism. Large community drums are usually covered with a blanket when not in use. The most important thing to remember is that shamanic drums are regarded as living, sentient beings and function best in the same conditions that humans find most comfortable.
Basic care instructions are as follows:. Store your drum in a warm, dry place away from direct heat or sunshine. You can keep your drum in a water repellent nylon padded drum bag or simply wrap it in a special cloth or animal hide; 2. Protect your drum from moisture. When your drum gets wet, the wood swells and the rawhide sags.
You can clean your drum by rubbing it softly with a slightly damp cloth. Never leave your drum in the car for any length of time in extreme heat or cold as this can split the head. Leaving your drum in direct sunlight for any length of time can also make the drum's head split.
When the humidity is high, you can restore the tone of your drum by heating it slowly with a hair dryer, in front of a fire, or on a heating pad.
Avoid heating the skin to a temperature that is too hot to touch. You can preserve the tone of a drum by putting it in a tightly closed plastic bag. In high-humidity areas, some people put some kind of a natural conditioner on their drumheads once a year. You can rub a light coating of lanolin or neatsfoot oil into the back of the drumhead and on the cords. Your drum will stay in tune longer and absorb less moisture. If a painted design on your drumhead is starting to wear away, you can touch it up with acrylic paint.
After your paint has dried, apply a coat of clear acrylic sealer to the entire drumhead using a wide brush or spray the design with clear matte art fixative. Should your drum ever require repair, consult the person who crafted the drum.
If that is not possible, find another drum maker who works in a similar way.
If you can find someone to teach you how to repair the drum, it's well worth the time to do so. With minimal care, your drum will last for many years as a trusted ally. So, you have decided to buy a drum. Which drum should you choose from the wide range of native hand drums for sale?
At stores and in the Internet, you can see a broad range of different hand drums with similar sizes and appearance. At the first sight, only prices differ. Of course, every customer would ask how they differ and what shamanic drum is worth buying. Every master values his work himself, so it is often expensive to buy a handmade shamanic drum. At our website, you can buy a native hand drum for a reasonable price.
Before buying a drum you need to decide what you want from it. When choosing, you need to hear the sound example and make your choice depending on your own needs. Shamanic native drums belong to certain traditions. The drums themselves are fully free from the spiritual overrun. A tambourine is just a resonant percussion instrument made in a certain tradition. It is becoming really shamanic in the hands of a person using it. The other important moment is the kind of leather drawn on the drum and the way it is fixed on the frame.
To let the drum vibrate with a true live and firm sound, leather should be processed naturally, without the use of chemicals. If the leather on the hand drum has sole light white color, then it is usually chemically processed, so it has lost a part of its acoustic and elastic qualities. In some shamanic stores you can buy a drum with fur which is specially kept by the master, such drums have deep low sound.
A hand drum with fur at the membrane will a more deep-voiced character, a bald drum will be rich both in low and high overtones. Goat skin is the most wide-spread material for drum creation. It is important for the even leather tightening and the same sound of the edges and the center of the drum.
It is hard to process the leather right without the use of chemicals, especially in humid climate.A drum birthed in this way is sacred, a healing instrument to use for yourself, and others if you choose. I am using this word in relation to the earth-based practice of connecting to ourselves through connection with nature and all that is. Disconnection is one of the biggest causes of depression, anxiety and addictions… and probably many other issues we are currently facing as a modern society. So why has Shamanism been around for so long, and why is it still relevant for us today? It requires no dogma and no outside authority. Shamanic practice gives you the tools to enter the spirit world yourself and discover your own power.
The Shamanic Drum Making Journey is an invitation to take time to connect more deeply to yourself, Mother Nature, and to birth your own medicine drum. Creating a drum in a shamanic way is to:. It includes the belief that the natural world has two aspects: ordinary everyday awareness, formed by our habitual behaviors, patterns of belief, social norms, and cultural conditioning, and a second non-ordinary awareness accessed through altered states, or ecstatic trance, induced by shamanic practices such as repetitive drumming.
The act of entering an ecstatic trance state is called the soul flight or shamanic journey, and it allows the journeyer to view life and life's problems from a detached, spiritual perspective, not easily achieved in a state of ordinary consciousness. Basically, shamanic journeying is a way of communicating with your inner or spirit self and retrieving information. Your inner self is in constant communication with all aspects of your environment, seen and unseen.
You need only journey within to find answers to your questions. You should have a question or objective in mind from the start. Shamanic journeying may be undertaken for purposes of divination, for personal healing, to meet one's power animal or spirit guide, or for any number of other reasons. After the journey, you must then interpret the meaning of your trance experience. The drum, sometimes called the shamans horseprovides a simple and effective way to induce ecstatic trance states.
When a drum is played at an even tempo of three to four beats per second for at least fifteen minutes, most novices report that they can journey successfully even on their first attempt. Transported by the driving beat of the drum; the shamanic traveler journeys to the inner planes of consciousness. According to shamanic cosmology, there are three inner planes of consciousness: the Upper, Middle, and Lower Worlds.
Humans did not invent these inner realms; they discovered them. Far from being a human contrivance, these archetypal worlds are inherent in the collective unconscious, the common psychological inheritance of humanity.
They are woven into the matrix of the psyche. They are a part of our psyche, a part of us whether we choose to become aware of it or not. The three realms are linked together by a vertical axis that is commonly referred to as the "World Tree. Its trunk is the Middle World and its branches hold up the Upper World. This central axis exists within each of us. Through the sound of the drum, which is invariably made of wood from the World Tree, the shaman is transported to the axis within and conveyed from plane to plane.
The Shamanic Drum: A Guide to Sacred Drumming
As Tuvan musicologist Valentina Suzukei explains, "There is a bridge on these sound waves so you can go from one world to another. In the sound world, a tunnel opens through which we can pass-or the shaman's spirits come to us. When you stop playing the drum, the bridge disappears. To enter a trance state and support your journey, you will need a drum or a shamanic drumming recording.
Shamanic drumming is drumming for the purpose of shamanic journeying. A good shamanic drumming recording should be pulsed at around three to four beats per second. You may also rattle, chant, or sing to induce trance. There is no right or wrong way to journey.Shamanic drumming is an ancient approach that uses rhythm to promote healing and self-expression.
